Turkish Canadian Society had organized several Children's Day celebrations in the past in honor of the April 23, National Sovereignty and Children's Day in Turkey. These celebrations were mostly held with the Turkish Canadian Community and were neglected since 2012.
In 2015, the transitional Board of Directors decided it was time for a larger event that will mirror the international celebrations in Turkey. The Board approved a budget of $2,500 for this event. The program committee for the 2015 Children's Day included TCS Communication Coordinator, Sinem Senol and volunteers/members Zuhal Kurtcu, Deniz Tasgin, Hulya Tan, and Gulseren Gunes.
The successful event was held on April 26, 2015 at the Art Gallery of Alberta. More than 150 people attended the celebrations. Cultural groups representing the local Latin American, Japanese, Irish, Indian, Ukranian, and Azerbaijani communities joined the Turkish Children in making this a truly amazing event.
The venue was an expensive choice, but thanks to volunteers who saved money on other expenses like picture frames, accessories for children, and to our Embassy for sending us tshirts and souveniers we could give as gifts to participants, and to modest cash donations from 4 event participants we were well under the budget.
TCS thanks all volunteers for their dedicated efforts and making this event a success.
