"INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN'S DAY"

Today is a very special day for all the children around the world because today is our holiday. Today we are celebrating “INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN'S DAY”.

We, the Turkish Canadian Society, contribute to a multicultural Canadian society in the city of Edmonton through International Children's Day held every year on April 23rd. We organize social events where we represent the Turkish culture.

The founder of the Turkish Republic, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, made a present of April 23rd to all the children of the world in order to emphasize that they are the successors of the future. That day is called "The National Sovereignty and Children's Day".

The first celebration of "National Sovereignty and Children's Day" was held on April 23rd, 1920, when the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM) was founded. It was organized to improve the feelings of fraternity, love, and friendship among children in a world where they can live in peace. The importance of April 23rd as a special day for children has been recognized by the international community. UNICEF decided to recognize this important day as "International Children's Day".

The Turkish people hope these children will remember this day forever and will contribute to a bond of peace with other cultures. The internationalization of this day was created on Turkey’s principles of “peace at home and peace in the world” and “sovereignty belongs unconditionally to the people”.

The City of Edmonton declared April 23, as "Multicultural Children's Day".

In behalf of Turkish community we thank Mayor Don Iveson and City of Edmonton for proclaiming April 23rd 2016 as Multicultural Children’s Day in Edmonton.
